Is Juliet a devil?
This movie revolves around the two sisters, one who has a lot of recognition and appreciation in her life and the other struggling to create an award for herself but has only faced failures. As the movie progresses, it is clearly seen that a person is trying to build a career and wants to achieve a goal, but since she cannot fulfill her dreams, she ruins her life. Amongst Juliet and Vivian, Vivian has a happy life with things she wants. She is a great piano player, and she is recognized in the academy, which is the prime factor that creates insecurities for Juliet. Juliet cannot achieve any success; it results in massive anxiety and depression. This also shows how people compare themselves to others and often forget to find what is their inborn talent. In the movie, it is seen that her mentor asks Juliet to continue learning because she is not good enough at playing piano at the concert. This leads to a mental breakdown, and whatever Juliet fears start showing up through supernatural events.
Max’s prediction:
This movie is all about Juliet’s mental breakdown, which Vivian’s boyfriend, Max, mentions how Moira, the girl who committed suicide, drew things that she could not talk about on the wall and because Juliet has seen those images, she is trying to represent them in her life without her knowledge.
Who is Moira, and why did she commit suicide?
Moira was known for her great talent of playing violin and was supposed to be playing at the concert at the academy, but since she has personal tragedies like her mother’s death in the hospital due to a coma after an accident in skiing and her father’s cynical act of burning down the house and committing suicide by staying inside leads to her grief. She sketches all these thoughts in her diary and jumps from the building to death because she could not deal with all the circumstances in her life, and she was hurled into critical sadness.
What are the drawings about?
As mentioned earlier, Moira drew her thoughts in a book, and Juliet found the book. She drew whatever she wanted to express; it contained many arts that troubled her and how she was trying to cope with her family trauma. In this process, she gets into a new obsession. Juliet keeps the book with her and gets obsessed with the drawings. The last one, possibly the picture of Moira jumping off the roof, is torn. Juliet gets so much into the book that she starts connecting her life with the drawings of Moira; however, the picture is completely changed as per Juliet’s thoughts, so this is not an actual supernatural activity. Juliet applies the drawing to her own life and event. It is about how Juliet alters the pictures with life’s experiences.
The pictures:
The drawings are completely Juliet’s interpretation. She gets completely obsessed with these drawings and visualizes them in a whole different manner. Her interpretation makes her completely delusional and leads her to psychological imbalance.
- The woman sitting on circular objects is connected with the pills that Juliet consumes for anxiety relief.
- The second one is a beast that is stabbed, and she symbolizes this drawing with her mentor because he is not supportive to her all through the movie.
- The third one is triumphing this drawing is her imagination of flirting with her sister’s boyfriend. However, when Vivian falls off the cliff, Juliet does not because she sees the ridge in the low light. It can be seen that in the picture, the Fallen angel has straight legs, but as Juliet visualizes, it has one leg bent as Vivian is seen after falling. Juliet also has a physical relationship with the twin’s boyfriend to pull both of them apart.
- Lastly, her self-esteem is crushed because of multiple rejections in her life. The last drawing is about a king, and Juliet interprets this as Dr. Cask, who has also tried to put her down, stating that people her age would have been composing if they were real artists.
Unnoticed death:
In the last scene, Juliet is jumping off the roof. She has always been focusing on playing the piano since childhood. Still, she has always failed in her life. Her sadness is answered as she observes no one is noticing her.
